“I wanted to show a human face.” Larionov explained why he flew overseas at the height of the hockey season

Responding to a question from a correspondent, the head coach of Torpedo Igor Larionov say what made him go “Torpedo” before the game with “Locomotive” and promised that there would be no more absences this season.

On Monday, Torpedo, under the guidance of Larionov, who returned from the United States, beat Spartak in the home game of the KHL Fonbet Championship (3-1). Nizhny Novgorod played the previous game without their head coach, who flew to Detroit for the celebrations dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the club’s Stanley Cup victory. The club without a coach set a kind of anti-record – the players took only 17 shots on the Lokomotiv goal and lost 0:4.

“I want to thank Spartak who at the end of the game caused us a lot of problems and threw the plot back,” Larionov said. — But in general, we had a good match today.

– What comment did you make to the team on the field of the last game with Lokomotiv?

— The jet lag is great, so I didn’t see the whole match. I do not know what happened. But that’s already in the past. The main thing is that now we have won.

– Going back a bit, do you regret leaving the team before the match with Lokomotiv? It turned out that Torpedo with you and without you are two big differences.

– There is such a feeling. But we live a life where we have to appreciate the past moments. Understanding what we did in Detroit, I mean the whole team, and the Russian Five, all the things that I left in the hearts of the fans there… I had a dilemma. I didn’t keep it to myself. And I spoke honestly with the guys. Because 25 years after Torpedo won the Gagarin Cup, there will be the same events. Today, the world is in a difficult situation. I wanted to show a human face, to come and be with Detroit, with the players, with those with whom I shared the toughest victories and the toughest defeats, if we talk about Volodya Konstantinov. I had no choice but to go there.

— Have you planned any absences abroad during this season?

– In any case. If only in Europe during the break to watch the players. I traveled from Detroit to Nizhny for two days, went to the airport straight after the game – it’s just a nightmare. With the current schedule, you cannot afford to be absent. The Detroit event had been planned for a long time.

Torpedo is fifth in the KHL Western Conference standings.
