NHL club forward “Colorado” Mikhail Maltsev talked about the unspoken rules that young players in the league must follow.
The SKA graduate left for the NHL at the age of 21. He spent two years in the New Jersey system and, in the summer of 2021, was traded to Colorado. Maltsev started the current season in the AHL, but in mid-October he was promoted to the starting lineup and went with the Avalanche to extended games with Columbus in Finland.
– Last year, my status was unclear, I played more in the AHL, there were more friends. This season he has only played four games at the farm club, more with the main team: first he spent a month in the camp, now he is also with the team.
– It seems that you are modest and shy in the team.
– No, I’m just modest in life, I feel normal in the team. Only the rules have to be followed, I, as a young man, have to be the last in the elevator,” Maltsev quotes Sport24.
– Why?
These are the rules of the NHL. Before, it was even harder. I had such a story: we played an away match, I played a little. Without hesitation, he got off the bus first and headed for the elevator. Then Eric Johnson (he’s the longest in the club) said next time I shouldn’t get in the elevator first because I have to let those who have played the most go first. And he sent me a video where the NHL veteran says that in his day, the youngster who entered the elevator first almost got kicked. Another of the rules: food should also not be taken first.
– How much do you have to play to stop being young?
– Fig knows. You should probably feel it for yourself. Yes, it’s easy to wait for the adults to take the first food or get on the elevator first,” Maltsev said.
