Semin said if Ovechkin could become a head coach in the future

Former Washington Capitals forward Alexandre Semin in an interview with explained by example Alexandra Ovechkina why it is difficult for a player who has succeeded in the NHL to subsequently work as a head coach.

Ovechkin this season took part in 18 matches, scored 14 points (8+6). The 37-year-old Russian is the author of several personal bests, historic club and league achievements. In total for his career, he has 1292 games in the NHL, 1424 points (788 + 636).

– In one of the matches, a microphone was attached to Ovechkin, and it was clear how he manages partners, leads the game. Do you think Sasha could become a head coach someday? Wayne Gretzky, for example, has become one.

– I think not. Because it’s very difficult to be a superstar for so many years and then to become a head coach. This is my personal opinion. For the coaching job, you have to study for more than a year. Learn from someone, even if you’ve played hockey.

Playing is one thing, coaching is another. And this job is even more difficult than being a player. Because 24 hours a day, you have to watch videos, analyze the game, train, go to matches… You have to devote your whole life to this job. It is not so easy.

Semin, along with Ovechkin, played in the NHL for Washington. He also defended the flowers of Carolina and Montreal, and in the KHL – Nizhny Novgorod Torpedo, Magnitogorsk Metallurg and Vityaz near Moscow. As a member of the Russian national team, Semin became a double world champion (2008, 2012). He now works as chairman of Krasnoyarsk Sokol.
