Three-time Stanley Cup winner Vyacheslav Fetisov recalled the achievements of former USSR national team player Alexander Martynyuk, whose death was announced on Wednesday.
Martynyuk died after a long illness at the age of 77. In 1973, the hockey player set a national hockey record by scoring eight goals against the German national team (18:2) in a World Cup match.
– Condolences to the family and fans of Spartak. We knew each other personally. I can say he was a very talented hockey player, a very smart striker, so it was not that easy to play against him. They were difficult but interesting matches. It’s a shame that an era is over. He entered the history of Soviet hockey not only with eight goals against Germany at the World Cup in 1973. He was the very strength of Spartak, which at that time was one of the best teams in the time. Naturally, the record will go nowhere, I don’t think anyone will ever break it. Sasha was a very talented athlete and a very good person,” Fetisov told RBC Sport.
Martyniuk took part in the 1972 Super Series against Team Canada. He also has two victories at the World Championships, he has become the USSR champion three times. In total, Martynyuk played 410 games in the USSR championships, scoring 212 goals, 197 of them with Spartak.
