“World champion Martynyuk was a great master, he was productive in any position” – Maiorov

Double world hockey champion in the USSR national team, former striker “Spartacus” Alexander Martynyuk was a grandmaster, he was productive, playing even on the left, even on the right, the two-time Olympic champion told Boris Mayorov.

On Wednesday, Spartak’s press service reported that Martynyuk died at the age of 77 after a long illness.

– Together with Alexander Akimovich Martynyuk, we regularly attended Spartak matches, there are a lot of veterans in our orbit. Of my generation now, we won’t even have five. And Alexander Akimovich is the second generation, 7 years younger than me. He was a very calm and balanced person. With such a character, people are not always great masters. This impression was created from the outside, but that is not the case at all, it is a misleading impression. He was a great master. It is no coincidence that he became twice world champion.

The most significant thing in his sports biography is that throughout his career he did not have permanent partners on the field, they changed. There was a trio, for example, Fomenkov – Borisov – Martynyuk, or Martynyuk – Shadrin – Yakushev. He could play both right and left, that was his advantage. He never said how uncomfortable he was. He was able to adapt, was a productive attacker in our team. His performance record is 8 goals in one match at the 1973 World Cup in Moscow as part of the USSR national team.

He was a non-confrontational person, knew how to find a common language with partners. Sometimes he was the butt of jokes from his teammates, but he always treated those remarks directed at him with a smile and humor and responded in a joking tone, Mayorov told .

Martyniuk took part in the 1972 Super Series against Team Canada. He also has two victories at the World Championships, he has become the USSR champion three times. In total, Martynyuk played 410 games in the USSR championships, scoring 212 goals, 197 of them as part of Spartak.
