Former Toronto Maple Leafs and Sweden national team player Berje Salming has died at the age of 71, according to the NHL club’s press service.

In October, it was learned that Salming had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Salming played for the Maple Leafs from 1973 to 1989, playing 1,099 games with the team. The Swede holds the franchise record for assists.

Salming became the first Swedish hockey player to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, he is also part of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) symbolic team of the century, which also includes hockey players Soviets Vyacheslav Fetisov, Vladislav Tretyak, Valery Kharlamov and Sergei Makarov.
