Captain “Capitals of Washington” Alexander Ovechkin reacted to the news that it became the new NHL record for goals scored in away games.
The Russian in the regular season game with the Vancouver Canucks (5-1) scored twice. He has 403 goals scored in away matches. By this metric, he surpassed Wayne Gretzky’s achievement (402).
“It’s always nice to beat the Great, no matter the stages. This is history,” journalist Samantha Pell quoted Ovechkin on her Twitter page.
In total, Ovechkin scored 793 NHL regular season goals. The forward ranks third on the NHL’s all-time goalscoring list, eight goals behind second-placed Gordie Howe (801).
