Ovechkin broke Gretzky’s record in the city where he was humiliated in 2010. How was it!

Ovechkin: Thank you guys for this record

It’s not every day that our Russian overtakes Wayne Gretzky! And it happened.

True, Alexander Ovechkin did not set the main record. He has 793 goals so far, while Gretzky has 894 in NHL history.

But today Ovi put up a demo when he broke Gretzky’s record for the most away goals in league history. And Ovechkin did it very suddenly. In the sixth minute of the game in Vancouver, with the grace of a heffalump, he climbed over the patch and finished the puck jump there.

It was a repeat of Gretzky’s record – the two had 402 goals on the road. But just six minutes later, Ovechkin scored another goal when a killer snap from the left circle sped the puck to a speed of 145 mph.

403! Phenomenal. Save for all time.

And it all happened in the first half. During the break, Ovechkin was asked: “How does it feel to pass Gretzky himself? Why do you like playing on the road so much, and especially in Canada?

“I don’t know,” Ovi replied. – Lots of fans, lots of attention to it. In fact, in those moments when I scored, our guys played very well, giving me assists. And I had to be patient to complete the moments.

It’s also worth noting that Alexander the Great simultaneously caught up with Jaromir Jagr (135) in the opener in the NHL game. And it’s also an all-time NHL record.

And one more thing – Ovechkin’s pucks were missed by Spencer Martin of Vancouver, who became the 165th goaltender in NHL history Ovechkin scored in his career. Only Patrick Marlo (177) and Jaromir Jagr (178) have upset more goalkeepers, but they have also played almost 500 more league games.

Boudreau did everything for Ovi to score a hat-trick

Alexander Ovechkin could have scored a hat-trick that night. In total, he scored a “hat trick” 29 times in his NHL career, and once it even happened in the playoffs.

But Ovi didn’t score more, despite managing five shots on target. However, his “Washington” won a convincing victory in British Columbia (5-1), and also scored Anthony Manta, defender John Carlson and a Slovak with a complex Hungarian surname Martin Fehervari.

Curiously, Canucks head coach Bruce Boudreau knocked Spencer Martin out of the net nearly seven minutes before the end of the game. Vancouver took the lead for a while, but it’s hard to save the game when you’re down 1-4.

It sounded more like a conspiracy theory. Boudreau used to coach Ovechkin in Washington. They are lifelong friends and Ovi constantly greets Bruce when they meet. And it seems old Boudreau has given Ovechkin a window of opportunity: “Come on, Alex, do a hat trick. The last time this happened was a year ago, on the outskirts of Florida. When will it happen to you otherwise?”

It’s just a joke, but Ovechkin still hasn’t scored. Although he became the first star of the game. Who if not him?

Ovechkin: It’s always nice to break Gretzky’s records

Ovechkin commented after the game that he had passed Gretzky for the most road goals in NHL history:

“It’s always nice to beat the Great. It doesn’t matter what stage it is. But that’s history.

If we talk about history, we can remember that it was in Vancouver that Ovechkin lost, perhaps, the main game of his life.

It was in February 2010. Then the Russian team came to the Vancouver Olympics in the status of big favorites. Two World Championship gold medals in a row, a brilliant selection of players. Evgeni Malkin is fresh off winning the Stanley Cup while taking home the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoffs’ most valuable player.

Ovechkin was the MVP of the regular season. He scored 50 goals per season as easily as if he had clicked seeds. I remember I was traveling around North America at the time, and just in Washington, I caught up with Canadian national team general manager Steve Yzerman.

I asked him what he thought of the Russian team’s chances in Vancouver. And then Yzerman made it clear that it would be very difficult to stop such a powerful team, and even the Maple Leafs weren’t standing by.

Stevie was trick or not then, but Russia left the group, reaching the quarter-finals directly. There, we were considered nominal owners. Canada went there by joining the qualifying matches, because in the group they lost against the American team.

But it was in this game that our team was humiliated with a score of 3:7. Every memory of Vancouver is a pain. Ovechkin, like all other Russians, did not show anything in this match. Goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov described it this way: “The Canadians jumped on us like gorillas out of a cage. As a result, the Maple Leaves won home gold. But Ovechkin still does not have a single Olympic medal. And in light of current international trends, it’s easy to believe that Alexander the Great won’t be making it to the 2026 Winter Games in Milan.

It is therefore very symbolic that it was in Vancouver that the glorious striker Alexander Ovechkin broke the record of Canadian idol Wayne Gretzky.

I won’t say Ovi is now off to the 2010 Olympics. But hopefully now this Canadian city will be associated with something good.
