Former head coach of the Russian national team Vyacheslav Bykov believes that the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) should be independent of decisions at the administrative level in the context of a tightening limit on foreign players in the league.
On Tuesday, the Sports Ministry officially approved the proposal of the Russian Hockey Federation (FHR) to tighten the limit of foreign players in the KHL to three people in the bid for the game. This season, you can register up to five foreign players per game.
– As far as I know, December 9 will be the final decision of the KHL. Now, if I understand correctly, the Ministry of Sports has made its recommendation. The point is that the KHL is a professional league and it should be independent of government structures and decisions. On the one hand, it is clear that the Ministry of Sports is responsible for the preparation and development of national teams, sees the development of the league in its own way, hence such a wish. On the other hand, the KHL must adhere to its own interests, it is a commercial structure which must receive dividends and earn money. And players only grow when there’s good, healthy competition.
We have to find a common compromise. But dictating the terms… It’s hard to say. We are waiting for the final decision of the KHL, then we will understand and hear arguments from one side and the other,” Bykov told Metaratings.ru.
