“Tightening the limit of legionnaires will help increase competition within Russian hockey” – Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation

Minister of Sports of Russia Oleg Matytsin expressed the opinion that the tightening of the limit of legionnaires in the Fonbet championship KHL will increase competition in Russian hockey.

The Department of Sports on Tuesday officially approved the FHR’s proposal to tighten the limit of foreign players in the KHL to three people in the game bid. In the current league, you can enter five foreigners per game.

Earlier, reported that the Ministry of Sports and the RFU returned to the subject of a possible tightening of the legionnaire limit in the RPL in the near future, if the situation in Russian sport does not change.

– All decisions must be taken in consultation with the federations. If such an approach is validated by the Ministry of Sports and public bodies, we will move forward in this direction. I think the example of hockey is emblematic. Let’s see how it will work from next season.

Will it reduce competition? We made the decision to lower the limit to three foreigners in hockey based on advice from the FHR. We believe this is a response to the current situation. This will help to increase competition within Russian hockey and allow young players, the reserve, to apply for places in the main teams, and thus strengthen the potential of the national team. How will this work in other sports? Let’s see.

Are we considering an increase in the number of legionnaires if the situation returns to normal? We’ll wait and see,” Matytsin told reporters.
