Offensive “Capitals of Washington” Alexander Ovechkin trademarked THE GR8 CHASE, dedicated to his pursuit of the all-time leading scorer in the NHL Wayne Gretzky according to ESPN.
The GR8 CHASE brand has a triple meaning, referring to the nicknames Ovechkin (Great Eight), Gretzky (Great) and the Russian striker’s desire to set a record.
The Ovechkin family took an active part in creating the logo, as well as the brand name. Licensed merchandise will be available for purchase immediately following the Capitals’ home game against the Dallas Stars on Thursday.
Ovechkin scored a hat trick Tuesday against Chicago (7-3) and hit the 800 NHL goal mark. The 37-year-old forward is behind Gordie Howe (801) and Gretzky (894), who previously said he would be happy if Ovechkin broke his record.
