National Hockey League (NHL ) discusses an increase in the number of regular season games from 82 to 84 for each team. It is reported by ESPN.
According to the source, the league wants to increase the number of matches so teams play more regional derbies. However, the current scheduling principle is set to continue, with each team now playing at least once each home and away, with rivals in the same division playing each other four times per season.
The decision to increase the number of games can be taken at the CEO meeting, which will be held in March 2023.
Each NHL team has played 82 regular season games since the 1995/96 season. Before that the clubs played 84 games for two years, the 1994/95 season was reduced to 48 games due to the lockout.
