The Russian national team did not play any matches throughout the year. In December 2021, Alexei Zhamnov’s team played Channel One Cup and haven’t been together since. And now, a year later, the Russian team is back in business and again at our home tournament – the First Channel Cup. Today, December 17, our hockey players will compete with the national team of Kazakhstan, and on Sunday – with the team of Belarus.
Ahead of our team’s debut at the 17th Channel One Cup, we can briefly recall how last year’s tournament went. For the first time in a long time, the Canadian team took part. It was with the duel against the Maple Leaves that Alexei Zhamnov’s team started the tournament. The meeting turned out to be productive and ended with the victory of the Russians with the score 4:3. Moreover, the Russian team with great difficulty beat the Swedes (1: 0) and defeated the Czechs (5: 2). In the decisive match for the title of winner of the tournament, our team fought with the Finnish team. Alas, the Russians lost this match in extra time – 2:3.
In the history of the tournament, for 16 draws, the Russian team won 9 times. The last time is in 2020.
This year, for well-known reasons, the national teams of Finland, Sweden and the Czech Republic will not participate in the First Channel Cup. Instead, teams from Belarus and Kazakhstan were invited to the tournament. Last Thursday, these teams already faced each other – the team from Belarus celebrated the victory with the score 4:1.
In the current Channel One Cup, the Russian team is considered the clear favourite. Under the banner of the team, Alexei Zhamnov brought together many leading hockey players from the clubs of the Continental Hockey League.
