Today met the council of coaches of the FHR, whose president is Boris Mayorov. In particular, he heard a report from Alexei Zhamnov on the performance of the Russian team in the home tournament, which was harshly criticized.
Zhamnov led the Russian national team last fall. At the 2022 Olympics, the team under his leadership won silver medals. Before that, Zhamnov had never worked as a head coach.
“We had to win in Moscow on one skate”
“Zhamnov’s coaching staff received an unsatisfactory rating for their work at the tournament,” Mayorov said. – And what else could it be if we lost the Moscow tournament, in which we had to win, as they say, on one skate? Another assessment after the defeat of the national team of Belarus simply cannot be.
– What should Zhamnov correct in his work, in the opinion of the council?
– Pay attention to the team size. The national team must be strong, it must bring together the best players. Because when you lose, and even against the Belarusians, the people don’t understand why? And no excuse that “we didn’t have the strongest line-up” is any good here. The spectator is not interested at all, he needs victories. All explanations of this kind matter little to him.
– It’s clear that the fans always need a result, and don’t talk about a long-term strategy.
– Absolutely. Therefore, I told Zhamnov that he should not be like Karpin, who invited incomprehensible teams for friendly matches with the national teams of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Of course, experiences are acceptable – you can invite a newcomer to the national team if the coaches see him in a certain role. But at the same time, the team must not weaken. In addition, I had big complaints to make to the KHL.

– FHR did not refuse this idea. Completely different circumstances intervened. And so it would be interesting to see such a confrontation. In the USSR, after all, it was so. If someone from abroad could not come to the tournament, we formed the second team for the December tournament at home without any problem.
– What decision was made specifically for Zhamnov?
The question of his resignation was not even discussed. No one was even going to raise him to the coaching council. Zhamnov remains in his place, he is a young specialist, he must draw conclusions. Unfortunately, he has to learn from those duds, which are allowed either at the Olympics or at a home tournament. It’s sad, but you can’t help it.
