“The Russian national hockey team was inspired by the fate of Pelé” – Roman Rotenberg

First vice-president of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation (RHF) and head coach of SKA Saint-Petersburg Romain Rotenberg told that the story of the three-time football world champion Pele is a source of inspiration and motivation for national team players.

Pelé died Thursday at the age of 82 after battling colon cancer. Earlier it became known that the Brazilian’s body stopped responding to chemotherapy.

Everyone has childhood memories. They are great football players – Pelé, Maradona. Famous world championships, legendary Brazilian style. Technical combinations, exciting game, dancing with the ball. Beach soccer in Copacabana, children run barefoot.

Pelé didn’t just play like a god. He promoted his sport, which the whole planet loves. We in the Russian national hockey team watched a wonderful film “Pele” at the World Championships. It was a source of inspiration and motivation for us.

After all, football and hockey are very similar. And we in Russia also love the witty combination play of effective passes and rallies. Short passes, “give – open” – we have appreciated this in hockey since Soviet times. It’s in our culture, in our blood.

Pelé’s life is a story about how you have to sacrifice everything to achieve your dream of becoming a great athlete. His legacy will live with us forever as an example of a boundless love for sport.

On behalf of the hockey family, I would like to express my condolences to all of Pele’s loved ones and to all of the fans who were also inspired by his example and are now mourning the departure of the King of Football, Rotenberg told .

Pelé is the only three-time football world champion (1958, 1962, 1970). He played 92 games for Brazil and scored 77 goals. At club level, the striker played for Brazilian Santos and New York Cosmos. The Brazilian is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the author of 1279 career goals.
