The Washington striker is due to play Toronto in the NHL on Jan. 23
Public Representative Council of Ukrainian All-Canadian Organizations Congress of Ukrainians of Canada made a request not to extradite the Washington Capitals striker to the Russian Alexander Ovechkin Canadian visa.
Washington is scheduled to play in Toronto on January 30 in the NHL regular season, and the forward will need a visa to enter Canada. Congress sent an open letter to Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly and Immigration Minister Sean Fraser asking them to refuse the Russian.
The letter states that Ovechkin never condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine. On the contrary, the hockey player repeatedly praised Russian President Vladimir Putin, continuing to post photos with him on social networks.
Ovechkin has 23 goals and 19 assists in 38 NHL games this season.
Washington is sixth in the Eastern Conference. Toronto is in the same conference in third place.
