‘Hollywood melodramas take a rest’: Ovechkin sweetly celebrated 808th NHL goal with son

Ovechkin is the 2018 Stanley Cup winner. Three-time world champion (2008, 2012, 2014).

He started his professional career at Dynamo Moscow at the age of 16. In the 2004 draft, he was selected by the “Washington” under the first general number.

He made his NHL debut in the 2005/06 season, winning the Calder Trophy as top rookie. Nine times he won the award for the best sniper – “Maurice Richard Trophy”, three times received awards for the most valuable player – “Ted Lindsay Award” and “Hart Trophy” and once the award for top scorer of the season – “Art-Ross Trophy”.

In 2018, he led Washington to the club’s first-ever Stanley Cup victory, becoming the tournament’s most valuable player and the first Russian hockey player to win the Stanley Cup as a team captain.

Ovechkin became the first Russian hockey player to score 500, 600, 700 and 800 NHL regular season goals. He is the record holder among Russian hockey players in the number of goals scored and points scored in the NHL championships. He also leads in career goals among current NHL hockey players. His goal against the Phoenix Coyotes on January 16, 2006 was recognized as the best in NHL history by ESPN.

Ovechkin made his debut for the Russian national team at the age of 17, becoming at that time the youngest player in its history. Participated in thirteen world championships, became three-time world champion (2008, 2012, 2014), also participated in three Olympic Games (2006, 2010 and 2014).
