The Washington Capitals tweeted a photo of the 35-year-old forward’s locker room jersey with the caption, “He’s coming back.” Earlier in the media, it was reported that Backstrom could miss the entire NHL regular season due to injury. In June 2022, he underwent surgery on his left hip.
Washington will host the Columbus Blue Jackets next Sunday.
Backstrom last played on the ice May 13, 2022 in a playoff game against Florida. In total, he spent 1058 league games, scored 1011 points (264 goals and 747 assists).
