The Norwegian Ice Hockey Association (NIHF) has withdrawn its bid to host the 2027 World Championship, according to the official website of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF).
It should be noted that this decision was made due to the lack of funding from the Norwegian government. The country’s Ministry of Culture rejected an offer to fund an application which included holding tournament matches in Baerum and Trondheim.
“Of course, we are disappointed with the refusal without prior dialogue. The Ice Hockey World Championship could be the biggest winter sporting event since the 1994 Olympics and would be of great significance for Norwegian sport, NIHF President Tage Pettersen said.
After Norway’s refusal to host the tournament, Kazakhstan and Germany continue to fight. The host of the 2027 World Cup will be announced at the IIHF Annual Congress at the end of May 2023.
