Alexei Kovalev: ‘I ruined my coaching reputation with Kunlun, the stats got bad’

Former coach of the Chinese club “Kunlun Red Star” Alexei Kovalev told that this stage in his career had a negative impact on his reputation as a coach, and also expressed a desire to work with a team that regularly makes the playoffs KHL .

Kovalev is an Olympic champion in 1992, he worked in Kunlun from 2018 to February 2022. Initially, the specialist played the role of assistant, then head coach. During this time, the Chinese club has played 257 games and won 77.

– Have you had any offers from the KHL to return to the coaching position?

– Not yet. Initially offered in Khabarovsk and Vladivostok. But the proposals went no further.

Are you ready to “live on the plane”?

– I would like to join a team that has the opportunity. I’m not saying Amur and Admiral don’t. But after working for several years in Kunlun, you understand how difficult it is – when you fly constantly, you are exhausted in the middle of the season. With any player, it’s so hard to fight for high goals, to get into the playoffs.

I would like to work in a team that regularly goes to the playoffs. I think I ruined my coaching reputation with Kunlun, the stats got bad. We have to sort it out with a normal team, where there is an opportunity to achieve something,” Kovalev noted.
