Andrey Arshavin: ‘Of our famous five from the USSR era, Makarov was my favorite hockey player’

Former striker of the “Zenith” of St. Petersburg and the Russian national team Andrei Arshavin in an interview with a correspondent, he said he loves playing hockey.

The former footballer played for Zenit, Arsenal, Kuban and Kairat. After the end of his playing career, Arshavin returned to Zenit, where he works as Deputy General Manager of Sports Development.

Andrey, do you like to play hockey?

– In general, in the “Zenith” at one time they played hockey. But then we were banned – a dangerous sport. And now I play, because after football everything hurts me. And after hockey, the muscles no longer hurt at all. I train with the team for an hour and a half – as if I had not trained at all. I just sweated, washed in the shower – and left. And hockey is more interesting, everything is somehow new, and I’ve already played enough football.

What hockey club do you support?

– Before it was “Detroit Red Wings” when the five Russians played there with Sergei Fedorov . And among our famous five from the time of the USSR, my favorite hockey player was Sergey Makarov.

– What is the importance of friendship between hockey players and football players?

— I don’t know, I don’t have many hockey friends. At one time, we closely communicated with Sasha Radulov. But we follow hockey one way or another.

– How do you duel Alexandra Ovechkina and Wayne Gretzky?

– I would say that it is not a duel, but a race. Everyone is waiting to see if Sasha will catch Gretzky in goal or not. But wait. I believe it will catch up.
