Moscow Ice Hockey Club Goalkeeper Coach “Dynamo” Konstantin Vlasov spoke about the work at the headquarters Bill Peters in “Motorist” .
Peters worked at the Yekaterinburg club from 2020 to 2021. Under his leadership, the team reached the playoffs in the 2020/21 season, where they lost in the first round against Avangard. Previously, he was the head coach of Team Canada during the team’s 2016 World Championship victory and also worked for several NHL clubs.
– It was very interesting for me to work with an NHL coach, to take something new for me that I had never encountered with other coaches before. As a person, Bill tried to be positive and cheerful, but it was very difficult for him in Russia. Bill had many questions he couldn’t find answers to. For example, why do we have such long summer camps and why do we need two training sessions a day, why many hockey players are overweight and do nothing to solve this problem. Why do we use three goalkeepers in training and on the road, how many days off to give and what load is needed in the breaks for the Eurotour. Etc.
In his work, Bill paid close attention to statistics, watched a lot of videos, but rarely showed the team’s bad deeds, focusing only on positive moments of play. The coaches and I even persuaded him to point out the mistakes of the team, but he very rarely agreed with us.
The workouts were very short and intense, but not heavy. At first, I was surprised that they were too light, but over time I realized that it was the NHL system: when you have 82 games in the regular season, you don’t need load ice , you have to put all your strength and energy into the game. I was also surprised that Bill paid too much attention to the face-offs, the first time I encountered this. It seemed like the throw-ins were for him first and foremost.
