“Kharlamov was ahead of the thinking of his rivals, thinking three or four seconds faster than anyone else,” Maltsev said in the film.
How was he in life?
– I remember that Kharlam had a dream: not to have a car, but a motorbike. He kept saying, “Oh, when am I going to buy this motorcycle?” They came abroad: the first thing for him is to go somewhere. Or listen to music or watch racing bikes.
That he had his first accident, I learned in the evening. And in the morning he was in the hospital. Kharlamov was lying, but he saw me, got up a little, we hugged, kissed. And we had a male conversation… I told him: “Life goes on. We need you”.
– And what happened before the Canada Cup in 1981?
– Kharlamov then said to me: “I feel that I am not going.” Even though he was in normal physical condition. But when he arrived from the tournament in Italy, I didn’t recognize him. He looked like he was stuffed with something. How much we walked together, but openly he said nothing.
Was Viktor Tikhonov responsible for not taking Kharlamov to the Canada Cup and he died in a car accident?
– To beat this Tikhonov … For such a mean thing as they did with Kharlamov. Horror.
– What happened to you after Valéry’s death?
– I was there, in Canada, I dreamed of Kharlamov almost every day. And most importantly, in hockey uniforms. How to decipher this dream? You have to go out and play – for yourself and for this guy.
– Who is Valery Kharlamov for you?
“You rarely see such a person. Maybe never at all.
If you met your friend now, what would you say to him?
– I AM? Now? I would open a bottle of champagne. We would have had a drink right away. And then we were talking.
