The National Hockey League (NHL) released a statement regarding the incident with the Russian defender “Philadelphia Cream” Ivan Provorov who refused to go to the warm-up before the match in a shirt with LGBT symbols.
Provorov refused to participate in the warm-up before the game against Anaheim, to which his team showed up in club jerseys with LGBT symbols. The Russian player said it goes against his views and the Orthodox religion.
– Players are free to decide which initiatives to support. We continue to support their voices and different perspectives on social and cultural issues. Clubs have the right to decide for themselves what to celebrate, as well as when and how – with the help of league guidance and support, NHL journalist Greg Wyshinsky quotes a statement on his social media.
The Flyers defeated Anaheim 5-2. Provorov finished the game without scoring any points.
