The management of the Women’s Hockey League (WHL) has decided to allow eight teams to participate in the playoffs of the 2022/23 season, according to the league’s website.
A total of nine teams participate in the WHL regular season.
– Several clubs have approached the league with a proposal to increase the number of participants in the playoffs, starting from the 2022/2023 season. The offer of the clubs is due to the cancellation of international events with the participation of the national teams of Russia, previously scheduled for April 2023, as a result of which additional time was freed up to organize hockey matches within the framework of the WHL Championship. The Russian Ice Hockey Federation supported the clubs’ proposal.
In the quarterfinals and semifinals of the playoffs, the teams will play in a series of up to two wins, in the final – up to three wins.
Initially, four clubs were supposed to contest the playoffs.
In February 2022, the IIHF Council suspended the national teams of Russia and Belarus from international competitions indefinitely due to the situation in Ukraine.
