President of the Continental Hockey League (KHL) Alexei Morozov said rising player market prices were one of the factors why the KHL objected to lowering the foreign player limit.
Next season, teams will not be able to register more than three foreign players per game.
– Much has been said about reducing the number of legionnaires. Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin said restrictions could be eased if foreigners return to the KHL. Is this option considered?
We have expressed our position on this issue. We have tried to convince everyone in the league that the current limit of five Legionnaires works for everyone. However, the Sports Ministry took a different decision, RB Sport quote Morozov.
– There is an opinion that now in the KHL prices will rise not only for legionnaires, but also for Russians. Can this happen?
– There is such concern. Money that the club could previously spend on a Legionnaire will now be unlocked. Clubs looking for a qualified player will compete on wages, which will lead to a contract increase. Rising prices in the player market was one of the arguments why the KHL opposes the reduction of the foreign player limit. But we have a salary cap, and to build a battle-ready team, all you need is two or three well-paid stars.
Of course, the players who lead the team and attract the fans deserve a good salary. We hope the clubs will approach the issue responsibly. If they increase the contracts, then only the salaries of the really strong and young/promising players. This will make the league more attractive, especially by helping to avoid leaving for other tournaments.
