KHL Referee-in-Chief Says Russian Judges Would Add Professionalism to World Hockey Championship

Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) chief referee Alexei Anisimov believes Russian referees would add professionalism to the 2022 World Championship in Finland.

The tournament took place in the Finnish cities of Tampere and Helsinki from May 13-29. The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) has not allowed the national teams of Russia and Belarus to participate in the World Championship due to the situation in Ukraine. The Finnish team won the tournament.

– The level of Russian judges in recent years at the World Championships and the Olympics speaks for itself. All final matches, if the Russian team does not play, are judged by referees from our country and the KHL as a whole.

Has the absence of Russian referees affected the standard of refereeing? It’s hard to work with when a third of your top referees are nearly wiped out. They cannot simply be replaced. First of all, it’s a short tournament. Secondly, it is very difficult for everyone (and someone came to the World Cup for the first time) to bring philosophy and methods. It’s hard to do right away and almost impossible.

Was the level of refereeing low? We have an unspoken practice – we don’t discuss colleagues. But Russian KHL referees would add professionalism to the World Cup, Anisimov said as quoted by RB Sport.
