Ovechkin says it didn’t get easier for him to break Gretzky’s record despite beating Howe

Russian striker and captainWashington Capitals » Alexander Ovechkin spoke about the sniper race in the NHL, noting that to be 100% sure he will pass Wayne Gretzky it’s forbidden.

Ovechkin is the second-highest scorer in NHL history with 812 goals, behind only Gretzky (894). The feat of Gordie Howe (801) Ovechkin, third, surpassed him last December in a game against Winnipeg.

– When you beat Howe, did the prospect of breaking Gretzky’s record become more real?

– No. Always not. If there were 10 to 20 goals left before the record, it might be easier. But during that time a lot can happen – injuries, anything can happen. I’m not the kind of person to say, ‘I’m going to do it,’ Ovechkin said in the ESPN documentary.

In January 2006, Ovechkin threw the puck into the Phoenix Coyotes goal after a solo pass, losing his balance. The NHL ranked this puck number one on the forward’s list of top goals.

We had a party two days before. I remember during morning training I felt that something was wrong with me, I don’t feel 100%. It’s my freshman dinner, I have to do what I have to. Perhaps this goal was made possible by what happened the day before. I looked at the scoreboard and thought, “Very good goal.” I never thought that everyone would think it’s the same goal, – said the player.

He also talked about his diet.

– In Washington, I eat only one dish – spaghetti with sauces. At first I eat salads, soups, spaghetti. A drink during a game? Coke, he said.

Ovechkin’s wife, Anastasia, said her husband couldn’t be said to be on a diet, noting that he ate pasta and “greatly liked meatballs”.
