“Spartacus” won’t enter the Fonbet KHL Championship playoffs, the team lacks a competent coach, two-time Olympic champion Boris Mayorov told RG.
On Tuesday, Spartak lost to Dynamo Moscow – 2:3 in the Fonbet KHL Championship match. In the last eight meetings, the Red-Whites have lost seven times.
– I don’t believe that Spartak will make it to the playoffs. A while ago, we missed the chance to hold on to the top eight by losing to our main rival, Dynamo Minsk. Lost at home to Sochi, lost to Neftekhimik, Nizhny Novgorod Torpedo. At the same time, the remaining schedule is very difficult: there are two matches with Dynamo Moscow, one match with CSKA, with Metallurg Magnitogorsk. Where to get points? For me, the question is already clear: Spartak will not enter the playoffs.
– Seven defeats in the last eight matches. What happened to the team?
– Nothing happened. Since Spartak was expressionless, he remained so. There was a small push associated with the change of head coach. For four or five matches the team performed well, but then it was gone. A common phenomenon: a change of coach always gives impetus to a game. I think the team lacks a competent specialist who would fix everything. A young team with a lot of promise, but we need time to see what it can become. This time is not now. At the same time, I look at the same Severstal. In terms of composition, it is not better, but its result is superior. The figure of the coach is very important. Well, the Spartak leadership probably doesn’t really believe that we can jump anywhere either. The head coach is gone, the team is led by his deputy. They did not seek a new mentor. I think it will be after the end of the season.
Let’s look east. Who do you see as the favourite?
– The other day, Amur won a very important victory over Avtomobilist. In general, I watched Khabarovsk play several times and I can say that I like the work of coach Vadim Yepanchintsev, who once worked at Spartak. He has a great team, Amur. I think he has a good chance of getting into the top eight.
On February 16, Spartak will meet Dynamo again. The match will start at 7:30 p.m. Moscow time.
