– Have you crossed paths with Alexander Ovechkin and other Washington stars?
– Yes, at training camp, including during the season. We trained together, talked, went to a team dinner. And it was amazing, because there are so many stars in Washington – Ovechkin, Backstrom, Kuznetsov, Carlson, Orlov, Oshi. I remember when I was at my first training camp after the draft and I saw these guys next to me – it was just amazing.
– They say that in communication Alexander Ovechkin is a simple guy who does not look like a big star.
Ovechkin is like a child. Likes to joke, laugh and play hockey. And of course, he’s a great guy. The kind of game Ovechkin shows at his age is just amazing. It’s very interesting to follow his run to Wayne Gretzky’s record.
Do you think he can break the record?
– If he continues to score in the same way, then why not? And how long it will take him to do so, no one knows for sure.
– What do fans in Canada think about a Russian hockey player breaking a legend’s record? Do they support Ovechkin?
– Of course they support. I don’t think there’s any jealousy in Canada that Ovechkin will break Gretzky’s record. People are looking forward to such a historic event, because it is not known if anyone else can surpass it. We feel his involvement when such big records are beaten before his eyes.
