Russian defender Dmitry Orlov will plead for “Boston Bruins” number 81, according to the club’s hockey club press service.
Since 2014, Orlov has played in the NHL under the 9th number. In Boston, this number is retired in honor of Hockey Hall of Famer Johnny Butsik, who scored 1,369 points (556+813) in 1,540 NHL games.
On Thursday, the Washington Capitals traded Orlov and forward Garnet Hathaway to Boston in a three-way deal.
The 31-year-old Russian played 686 games for the Capitals, scored 256 (60 + 196) points with a utility indicator of +104. Orlov, as part of a Washington club, won the Stanley Cup in 2018.
