Gorbenko: ‘Kvartalnov and I did honest, high-quality work at Ak Bars’

Former HC coachAK bars Igor Gorbenko told Metaratings.ru that he Dmitry Kvartalnov managed to perform honest and high-quality work in the Kazan club.

Kvartalnov and his coaching staff worked at Ak Bars from 2019 to 2022.

– Can the hockey you staged with Kvartalnov “Ak Bars” be called primitive against the background of the game of Bilyaletdinov?

“I wouldn’t say he was primitive. We played active hockey, the team skated. The game was spectacular, people were going hockey. I think the fans liked our game.

– It seemed that last year there was already a minimum of risk, they played extremely carefully.

– We understood that we had sunk at the level of the composition and were repelled by those who were at our disposal. It was hard and we knew how to play. But we did not close, there was variability. Somehow, maybe, it was not luck, but the lucky one is lucky.

– If you don’t take this year’s newcomers, then the backbone of the team is made up of players who were launched by your HQ.

— I believe we have done an honest and high quality job. We had a great time at Ak Bars: three years passed like a day. Ak Bars is not a foreign club for us. We are still in contact with the team, with the staff. They were worried when they failed to fall. Now we are happy that everything is fine. The only thing that disappoints me is that the Bars didn’t make it to the MHL playoffs. With us, the youth team won bronze two years in a row, the Bars went to the playoffs every three years.

In the first round of the Gagarin Cup qualifiers, Ak Bars will meet Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk, the first game of the series will be held on March 1 in Kazan.
