Former coach of Spartak Moscow Alexander Yakushev believes that the absence of the “red-whites” in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) playoffs is largely due to frequent changes in the coaching staff.
Spartak failed to reach the KHL playoffs for the first time since the 2016/17 season, finishing the regular season in ninth place in the Western Conference standings. This season, the Muscovites have changed the head coach twice: instead of Boris Mironov, the team was led by Igor Grishin in November 2022, who was later replaced by Alexei Zavarukhin.
– I took Spartak’s failure to make the playoffs negatively. The problem is that the team played very unevenly, did not score points where they should have (taken), and this is due to the overreaching of the coaching staff. They still can’t decide on a head coach, and that’s very important, because he has to sign players not after the season, but in the middle. The coach has to negotiate with those he sees in the team, and after the season it will be too late, since all the players will be sorted,” Yakushev told .
The KHL playoffs begin March 1. Watch live broadcasts of the matches of the Gagarin Cup on the federal channel and thematic channels of the holding, as well as on the sites matchtv.ru and sportbox.ru.
