The opening games of the Fonbet KHL Championship playoffs, which took place on March 1, brought an unusual statistical record.
For the first time in league history, four teams with lower rankings won the opening games of the first round of the playoffs, according to the KHL press service.
On Wednesday, Ak Bars (first seed in the Eastern Conference) lost at home to Neftekhimik (8th in the East), Salavat Yulaev (2nd in the East) lost to Admiral (7th in East), SKA (1st in the West) lost to Dynamo Minsk (8th in the West), and Lokomotiv (3rd in the West) lost to Vityaz (6th in the West).
Three victories each of the teams with the lower seed in the first matches of the first round were won in the seasons -2008/09, -2009/10, -2012/13 and -2015/16. In the 2021/22 season, the guests won three times in the first games, and Spartak won a technical victory in all games in the series with Jokerit.
On March 2, four more matches will take place in the KHL playoffs, which will be the first in the first round.
