Anaheim NHL coach diagnosed with malignant tumor

Doctors found the NHL club’s assistant head coach “Anaheim Ducks” Mike Stothers has third-degree lymph node melanoma, according to the team’s website.

The coach is under medical supervision and will begin treatment in the coming weeks, the 61-year-old specialist will undergo surgery.

“I would like to thank my family, friends and the club, led by our owners Henry and Susan Samueli, for their incredible support during this difficult time. I want to share a simple piece of advice with everyone: listen to your body. If you notice anything unusual, contact your doctor immediately. Please don’t wait. It could be the best decision you’ve ever made,” Stothers said.

Stothers played for Philadelphia and Toronto in the NHL, spent most of his career in the American Hockey League (AHL). As a coach in 2015, he led the Manchester Monarchs to the Calder Cup, the AHL’s premier trophy. In the NHL, Stothers also worked for Philadelphia and Atlanta.

Melanoma is a type of malignant tumor of the skin.
