Plushev explained why no one would boycott World Cup hockey games because of Russia’s return

Honored Coach of Russia Vladimir Plushev I am sure that there will be no boycott of international tournaments with the participation of our team if Canada and the USA are in favor of its return.

On Monday, a source close to the governing bodies of the IIHF told on condition of anonymity that the majority of IIHF members, for business reasons, are in favor of Russia’s return to the world championships. Among them are the federations of Canada and the United States, and against the Czech Republic, Finland, Sweden and the Baltic countries.

“It’s good that such talks are taking place. It’s good that representatives of other countries are in favor of our return,” Plyushchev told Gazeta.Ru.

– How likely are some countries to boycott matches with our team?

“If Canada and the United States are not against the return, then the rest will make this decision and play,” said the former Russian national team coach.

In February 2022, the IIHF Council suspended the national teams of Russia and Belarus from international competitions indefinitely. The teams missed the 2022 World Cup. Russia was also deprived of the right to host the 2023 World Youth Championships in Omsk and Novosibirsk.

In January, IIHF chief Luc Tardif told that the issue of admitting the Russian team to international tournaments would be discussed at the organization’s annual congress in May.
