Torpedo defeated Dynamo Moscow (4–2) in the first round of the Gagarin Cup with a score of 4–2. Nizhny Novgorod have won three consecutive matches in overtime (5:4 OT, 4:3 OT, 2:1 OT).
— Of course, we are all very happy that the team has offered such a vacation to the whole city and region. Nizhny had been waiting for this success for seven years, and we saw just how wild the excitement and interest was during the regular season and the first round of the playoffs. The crazy support that the fans provided both at home games, in the fan zone and on the road was noted by absolutely everyone: hockey players and coaches, as well as neutral specialists. We understood the importance of these matches for hockey fans and did our best to give as many of them the opportunity to cheer on the team in Nizhny Novgorod and outside. Very cool, it all led to success. But, as I said, despite the pleasant sensations and emotions, we have no euphoria. An important step has been taken, but the work continues. The team prepares with might and main for the next round and waits for their opponent.
Any success is always the result of teamwork. I would like to thank our governor Gleb Nikitin, who is deeply immersed in club affairs, regularly attends games and supports the team as well as the entire stadium. Full support and assistance in resolving all issues helps us to develop and set the highest goals in the future. And this applies not only to the main team, but also to the entire system of the club, as well as its infrastructure. A lot is being done in the region to develop our sport. This applies to children’s, youth and women’s hockey. With the Governor’s backing, the issue of building an ice rink and a new home for the Torpedo Sports School finally took off. It is a great joy to see how quickly the work on the construction site of the new arena is in full swing. Now, while getting tickets to Torpedo games is almost impossible, it is very important infrastructure for the region. With such support, our hockey region will certainly receive a new impetus to continue its growth!
Does the team have a preference for a second-round opponent? Even during the regular season, we talked about the fact that there are no “weak” or “convenient” opponents in the KHL. And in the second round, they cannot be even more so. SKA and Lokomotiv are very strong teams who set the highest goals for themselves, even if they go there in different ways, if we talk about team style. However, Torpedo has the experience of winning in the regular season with both opponents. We believe in our guys, in our coaching staff, we believe in our strength and that the most interesting matches are waiting for the fans again! – said Kharlamov “Championship”.
“Torpedo” for the third time in history reached the second round of the Gagarin Cup. This has already happened in 2012 (2-4 with Dynamo Moscow) and in 2016 (1-4 with CSKA).
Torpedo’s opponent in the quarter-finals will be determined later, after the seventh game between CSKA and Severstal. If the army team goes further, Torpedo will play against SKA, if Severstal players prove stronger, Igor Larionov’s team will oppose Lokomotiv.
