Ovechkin will break Gretzky’s NHL scoring record in a few seasons, Kozhevnikov believes

Two-time Olympic hockey champion Alexander Kozhevnikov believes that in the next few seasons Russian hockey player Alexander Ovechkin will be able to break Wayne Gretzky’s record and take the first place in NHL history among snipers.

On Tuesday, Washington lost to Columbus in overtime in the NHL regular season game with a score of 6:7. Ovechkin scored a goal that was his 820th of his career – ahead of sniper roster leader Gretzky (894), the Capitals captain had 74 goals to score.

Prior to the game, the NHL and Capitals held a ceremony honoring Ovechkin, who scored his 802nd career goal on Dec. 23, 2022, passing Gordie Howe (801) for second place in scoring history of the league.

– Sanya is a big boy, go to his goal. A few more seasons and everything will be decided. All hockey fans are waiting for this victory, but someone will not like it.

– In Washington there was an Ovechkin throne made of 802 pucks. It was put on before the game with Columbus.

– People love him and everyone in the club loves him, it’s true. It brings joy to fans, and simple, normal people appreciate it,” Kozhevnikov told .

In total this season, Ovechkin scored 69 (40+29) points in 66 games.
