“Before, Lokomotiv could go out when something was not in our favour. Now we have moved away from that.” – Polunin

HK Striker “Locomotive” Alexander Polunin told RB Sport how head coach Igor Nikitin changed the psychology of the team.

CSKA beat Lokomotiv 5-0 on Wednesday. The army club won the series with a score of 4-3 and will face SKA Saint-Petersburg in the semi-finals of the Gagarin Cup.

– When CSKA took the series lead 2-0, Igor Nikitin said you just have to believe in yourself. Once 1-3 they took the series to Game 7, so you believed it?

– Igor Valeryevich, even when he came to Yaroslavl, began to pay a lot of attention to psychology. He both convinced and explained that it was time for the Russian players to rebuild themselves, and not to take on the role of leader episodically. After all, for many years the top five were legionnaires, and somewhere inside, perhaps, they sat that at decisive moments they would still be let out to drag them. Now that barrier was broken, but not broken.

– In the second period, the first bar of Shalunov, the assault on Loko, and at CSKA Kamenev made the score 0:3 with the first throw. Is this the defining moment of the series?

– No. We did not give up and did not lose hope. The question of self-confidence, I say, the coaches had a lot of conversations with us. Previously, Lokomotiv could go out, because something did not develop in our favor, now we have hopefully overcome that. But again, after 0:5 it is wrong to talk about this topic and, probably, even stupidly. All this must be proven by the result, and not explained by words,” Polunin said.
