Late in the third period, Ovechkin repeatedly hit Rangers forward Barclay Goodrow with a stick in the back, earning him a 2-minute sending-off. Following the episode, a fight ensued, for which the judges gave Ovechkin an additional 10 minutes of disciplinary fine. As he left the ice, the Russian sarcastically applauded the referees.
During this meeting, Ovechkin spent more than 18 minutes on the ice and collected an assist.
The Rangers are fourth in the Western Conference standings with 101 points and Washington is 12th with 77 points.
