“Capitals of Washington” lost the chance to qualify for the NHL playoffs.
This became clear after the Florida Panthers-Buffalo Sabers game, in which the Panthers won 2-1. The capital club will no longer be able to score the number of points required to make it into the top eight of the strongest teams in the Eastern Conference according to regular season results.
Missing the NHL playoffs is the first time for the Capitals since the 2013/2014 season and only the second since the 2006/2007 season. The team has made the Stanley Cup Playoffs eight straight times so far this season.
Washington still has five games to play before the end of the season. Russian hockey players Alexander Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Alexander Alekseev play for the team.
