IIHF President Luc Tardif confirmed that the aggressor countries should not wait to return to the competition.
Russia and Belarus will not participate in international hockey competitions until the end of the war in Ukraine. IIHF President Luc Tardif said it again.
He recalled that the aggressor countries are prohibited from participating in the competitions of the International Ice Hockey Federation until 2024. At the same time, the decision on the participation of the Russians and Belarusians in the 2025 tournaments will be made in March 2024.
“I hope that Russia and Belarus will return as soon as possible, because this means that the war is over. It is a matter of the safety of the fans, of our teams. In any case, without a visa, you cannot may travel. And no one knows how long it will continue.
I understand that sometimes there is a political approach. As a person, I have my own understanding of the situation. But in my position at the IIHF, I have to make a decision according to our leadership and protect our competition,” Tardif was quoted as saying by ESPN.
It will be recalled that the IIHF previously extended the disqualification of Russia and Belarus from hockey.
