Thursday, May 25, at the Ice Hockey World Championship, is the day of the quarter-finals. The capitals of Finland and Latvia will each host two fights at this stage. As a result, Harijs Vitolins’ side won five in a row, including over the Czechs in extra time (4:3) and the group winners – the Swiss – also in extra time (4:3). The Latvian national team took third place in the group, with a positive goal difference, leaving behind the teams of Switzerland and Canada.
In the past 15 years, the Latvian national team has beaten the Swedish team only once at the world championships. That was in 2009. Then in the group stage, the Scandinavians lost on penalties (2:3). After that, Tre Krunur won the Latvians eight times at the world championships. But almost always the victory was not easy for the Swedes. Once even in overtime.
In the current World Cup, the Latvian national team is improving from game to game, so in the quarter-finals, in front of their own fans, they will certainly give battle to the Swedish team. It should be noted that the Latvians became the best team in the group stage in the minority game. Add to that the fact that the Scandinavians are far from being the most productive team in the championship. And we get a match formula in which the chances of success will be approximately equal.
