IIHF chief does not consider federation decisions on Russian and Belarusian policy

Decisions of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) regarding the non-admission of national teams Russia And Belarus before participating in tournaments are not political, said the head of the organization Luc Tardif .

The national teams of Russia and Belarus have not participated in IIHF international tournaments since spring 2022 due to the situation in Ukraine. In March, the federation extended the suspension of teams for the 2023/24 season.

– All decisions made by the IIHF Council are aimed at protecting competitions and delegates from Russia, Belarus. These decisions are not political. We will talk about competitions, sports, I want to assure you that we do not accept any political pressure, – said Tardif at a meeting of the IIHF Congress.

In April, the IIHF chief said he hoped for a quick return of Russian and Belarusian athletes to competitions under the organization’s auspices.

The 2023 Ice Hockey World Championship takes place in Finland and Latvia from May 12-28.
