President of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Luc Tardif said that the question of the participation of the national teams of Russia and Belarus in international tournaments will be considered in March 2024.
On Sunday, IIHF board member Pavel Bure told that a decision on the Russian national team would not be made until next spring.
“I can tell you exactly when it will happen. It will be at the IIHF Council meeting in the third week of March 2024. Then we will make a decision on the 2024/25 season, which will also include the start of Olympic qualification. We hope to make a decision as soon as possible so that participants know exactly what is at stake in terms of promotion and relegation in international competition,” Tardif told a press conference.
The national teams of Russia and Belarus have not participated in tournaments under the auspices of the IIHF since the spring of 2022. In March, it became known about the extension of the suspension of the teams for the 2023/24 season.
The 2026 Winter Olympics will take place in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo from February 6 to 22.
