No matter how the current Canadian team is called almost the weakest in history, they still made it to the World Cup final. Third time in a row and sixth time in the last seven tournaments. Along with the Finns, the Canadians have met in the final at the last three world championships. But this time the final line-up is different and quite unexpected in terms of names – Canada – Germany. While it can’t be said that the Germans didn’t deserve to reach the final with their play, they took fourth place in their tough group but battled all the favorites. The Swedish national team won only 1:0, Finland – 4:3 and USA – 3:2. Germany won against all middle peasants and foreigners and reached the quarter-finals against Switzerland, who were considered the favorites for the confrontation, because they won the group, but the Germans faced their neighbors – 3:1. In the semi-finals, Germany again played with the USA, again there was a fairly even game, the main time of which ended 3:3, with the German Marcel Nebels equalizing in the 59th minute. Then there was extra time and Tiffels’ winning goal. As a result, instead of the classic match USA – Canada, in the final we will see the confrontation between the Germans and the “maple leaves”, which in the semi-finals almost flew out of the sensational Latvia, which had already taken the bronze medals.
Canada qualified for the playoffs from second place, but managed to lose to Norway and Switzerland in the group. In the quarter-finals, the Maple Leaves faced the Finns and gave them no chance, winning 4-1, Finland only scored a prestige goal at the very end of the match. But in the semis, Canada struggled with Latvia, losing the first two periods 1-2. It was only in the third period that Latvia sat down, Canada quickly leveled the score, added speed and put pressure on the opponent – 4:2.
And now we have the final against Germany, who haven’t reached the main game of the World Cup since 1953, when they lost to Sweden. The first German final was in 1930, then Canada was the opponent. The Maple Leaves won 6-1. At the world championships, Germany has already won 4 medals: 2 silver and 2 bronze. Today, the Germans will certainly receive their fifth medal, but will it be the first gold medal? Where will Canada win the 28th gold medal?
