Athletistic/Hockey. Today, May 28, the Ice Hockey World Championship ends. Of course, there are a lot of unpleasant things in it. The Russian national team is still suspended from international competitions, athletes are deprived of the opportunity to compete for the world title. In addition, this year the Ice Hockey World Championship was to be held in St. Petersburg. However, for the same political reasons, the world championship was moved to Tampere, the city of Finland, and to Riga, the capital of Latvia.
Nevertheless, there have been some interesting matches at this World Cup. And the Latvian national team has become a real discovery. Today, May 28, the Baltic team won the World Championship bronze medal for the first time in history. Moreover, Harijs Vitolinsh led the team to the award. The specialist at one time was a member of the coaching staff of Oleg Znarok in the Russian national team, and in the victorious 2014 World Cup final he became the interim head coach of the national team of our country, since Oleg Znarok was disqualified.
If we talk about the course of the Latvian national team, the wards of Harijs Vitolinsh started with defeats to Canada (0:6) and Slovakia (1:2). However, the Latvians won the remaining five group stage matches. They beat the Czech Republic (4:3 OT), Norway (2:1), Slovenia (3:2), Kazakhstan (7:0) and Switzerland (4:3 B). In the quarterfinals, Latvia managed to defeat Sweden (3:1) and lost to Canada in the semifinals – 2:4. Today in the game for third place, Latvia beat USA 4:3 in extra time.
Many Russian ice hockey fans reacted to Latvia’s victory at the World Championships. They left their comments on “Match TV” page in Vkontakte.

– Athletes play. Why are you bringing politics here? You are yourself like Western politicians. Vitolinsh and Znark won gold for the Russian team. And what about deer in offices? The boys played a mighty World Cup, won medals – that’s a feat. Nobody stands on the ears – just a sporting result that deserves a note. And there is no need to interfere with politics here.
