Former player of NHL clubs “Florida” and “Washington” Andrei Podkonitsky joined the Omsk coaching staff “Avant-garde” according to the press service of the hockey club.
The Slovak specialist took over as head coach of Avangard. In the 2022/23 season, Podkonicki worked as a coach at Slovan Bratislava and as an assistant coach for the Slovak national team during the World Cup.
— To work with defensemen, we were looking for a modern coach with a progressive vision of hockey, with the necessary skill set that the game dictates today. Podkonický has won the Slovak championship twice, he has serious experience in the national team and an Olympic bronze medal. In different teams he was both assistant and head coach, he specializes only in defenders and the minority. He devotes a lot of time to video analysis, tactical analysis, loves working with young people. It is also important that he played in Russia, knows Russian and English. With the arrival of Podkonitsky, Avangard’s coaching staff has finally been formed,” said Anton Kuryanov, Managing Director of Avangard.
Earlier in May, Alexander Krylov stepped down as Chairman of the Board of Avangard.
Last season, Omsk reached the KHL Eastern Conference Finals, where they lost to Ak Bars Kazan 1-4.
