Dementiev thinks Vegas might not renew contract with Barbashev

Hockey agent and expert Alexei Dementiev believes that “Vegas Golden Knights “may not have enough funds to sign a new contract with the Russian striker Ivan Barbaschev .

Vegas defeated Florida 9-3 in Game 5 of the NHL Finals series at home to win the series 4-1. Barbashev previously won the Stanley Cup in 2019 with St. Louis.

– I can say with certainty that a hockey player like Ivan Barbashev very clearly fits into the concept of the Vegas Golden Knights team. It’s a team of four links, they are superbly organized hockey players, each understanding their role on the ice. So I think Vegas will try to keep Ivan. But there is a problem. Ivan Barbashev is 27 years old. He had just won the Stanley Cup twice and was far from the last part of the team to win the trophy. Any club would want to sign such a valuable and titled player. He can therefore count on a significant increase in his salary. Now he receives 2.25 million dollars, – said Dementiev RT.

According to him, the hockey player is likely to choose the option that will bring him money, because before Barbashev did not earn large sums.

– It is not a fact that Vegas, which already has ten attackers to its credit, will have the means to satisfy the Russian’s request. Therefore, the likelihood that the Golden Knights simply cannot afford to offer him a new contract is very high. They will have to give up someone with whom a contract has already been signed to negotiate with Barbashev. But Vegas is unlikely to make such a shake-up,” Dementiev added.

After leaving St. Louis, Barbashev played 45 games for Vegas, including the playoffs, and scored 34 (13+21) points.
