“FHR proposed to divide KHL clubs into ‘strong’ and ‘weak’, this would violate the principle of sport” – Morozov

President of the Continental Hockey League (KHL) Alexei Morozov said that the Russian Hockey Federation (FHR) proposed to divide the league participants into two groups – “strong” and “weak” – with a different number of teams, but the KHL management does not support such initiative.

– The KHL sent the FHR to agree on the schedule structure for the 2022/23 season in May, where each regular season team is to play 68 games, a total of 166 playing days, with a break in December for the Handle One cup. Organize comfortable playoffs for the teams, that is, with matches every other day from March 1 to April 29.

The FHR’s response was received in June, where it is proposed to divide the teams according to the sports ranking into two groups with a different number of teams, into “strong” and “weak”, with the number of 70 games in the regular season.

We believe that it is impossible to propose such reforms a few weeks before the start of the championship without in-depth study and without taking into account the opinions of all the clubs. The distribution of participants in the conferences before the start of the championship on the basis of the sporting results of the past season alone would violate the sporting principle. Ignoring the location of clubs will increase the cost of air travel as the number of clubs increases. Since mid-March, the League has been in dialogue with airlines and clubs regarding the organization of flights for next season, and the lack of a timetable and flight pattern could affect the logistical situation.

To have a comfortable, regular and paced schedule of 70 matches for each team, you must have at least 170-175 matchdays, otherwise you will have to play a large number of double and double matches and long series of matches every other day . .

The League has sent all the arguments to the FHR, now it is important to agree on the structure of the new season as soon as possible in order to avoid the logistical and organizational difficulties that the clubs and the League could face.” Morozov said, per the KHL news service.
